Pada tahun 1962, AS, Akademi sains Nasional  merekomendasikan membangun teleskop ruang angkasa besar. Pada tahun 1977, Kongres mulai menggalang dana untuk mendanai proyek dan konstruksi Teleskop Hubble  dimulai.

Pembangunan Teleskop Ruang Angkasa Hubble selesai pada tahun 1985. Peluncuran Hubble ditunda karena tragedi Pesawat  Challenger. Hubble diluncurkan pada pesawat ruang angkasa pada tanggal  25  April 1990.

Dalam beberapa hari Hubble mengirimkan kembali gambar-gambar yang berada di luar fokus. NASA menemukan sebuah cacat besar di cermin raksasa. Cermin raksasa terlalu datar pada satu sisi  telah bergeser 1 / 50 dari lebar sehelai  rambut manusia .
