A few weeks ago I had brunch at Dosa on Fillmore. It was absolutely fantastic. I love having something a little out of the ordinary for brunch. There are omelets with chiles, dosas with eggs, spiced up scrambled eggs, all the things you want but served in a new way. So I was particularly thrilled to get a chance to work with chef and owner Anjan Mitra to put together a really cool menu for BlackboardEats. And now I have an excuse to go back for dinner.

Anjan uses the best ingredients and brings a level of freshness to Indian food that is pretty much unique in San Francisco. He's been wanting to do a chile pepper menu for some time and the dishes are all over the map in terms of heat. I am always torn between ordering dosas which are like crepes or uttapams which are like moist pancakes. For this special menu there is a Habanero uttapam. Try not to keep pent up anger of frustrations, this is bad for your health. Instead find ways of expressing them in a way that will not cause more injury or hurt to anyone.
 
Working hard brings tremendous personal satisfaction. It gives a feeling of being competent in finishing our tasks. Accomplishments are necessary for all of us, they give us a sense of value. Work on things that you feel worthy of your time. Learning is a joyful exercise. Try and learn something new everyday.  Learning also makes us expand and broaden our horizons. And could also give us more opportunities in the future.

Run, jog, walk and do other things that your body was made for. Feel alive. Avoid exposure to negative elements like loud noises, toxins and hazardous places. These are the few simple things you can do everyday to be happy. And always remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln, he says that, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be."

Kalamata Olive Bread

I made this loaf of bread for my son because he's likes bread and he loves kalamata olives. He loved this bread so much he didn't even want to slather it with butter - he just ate it plain and loved every bite. Louisiana Gulf Shrimp

Help! I'm undergoing gulf shrimp withdrawal! On my Louisiana Seafood adventure I ate shrimp every single day and never got tired of them in the least. In Louisiana there are white shrimp, brown shrimp and freshwater shrimp. I particularly liked the flavorful brown shrimp I tried, though they are less popular than the larger white shrimp.

Shrimp from the gulf are sweet and succulent and perfectly safe to eat. At the Sustainable Foods Institute (part of Cooking for Solutions at the Monterey Bay Aquarium) I spoke with scientists who told me that the shrimp population came back quickly after the oil spill in the gulf and the testing has not shown any signs that the seafood is contaminated. Fortunately Louisiana gulf shrimp are available all over the country and are really worth seeking out for their superior flavor and texture and because they are harvested in a more sustainable way than the cheap shrimp you find imported from Asia.

So how many ways are there to eat shrimp? Probably more than I can count, but here are my absolute hand's down favorites from the trip:

Barbecue shrimp from GW Fins, upper left hand corner. Now barbecue shrimp in Louisiana are not "throw a shrimp on the barbie" Australian shrimp, or doused in Texas style barbecue sauce, they are cooked in butter and spices and positively delicious. I found this recipe online, so you can try making them at home. Now if I could just get my hands on the savory Jazzmen rice pudding recipe that accompanied the shrimp...

Shrimp boil is next, shown in the upper right hand corner. But here's what I learned about shrimp boil. It's shrimp poached gently in a spiced broth, off the heat! The shrimp never get boiled, just the seasoning mix and cooking liquid. This was news to me, but explains why you end up with such juicy shrimp, it's probably the most gentle way to cook them. Cooking them in the shells helps prevent them from overcooking and yet they do take on the flavor of the "boil."

Shrimp remoulade is in the bottom right hand corner, as served at Mandina's. My thanks to Pim for introducing me to this neighborhood gem and my other charming and enthusiastic dining companions–Adam aka the Amateur Gourmet and Chichi who writes for Serious Eats. The secret to this dish was of course the remoulade sauce, which was heavily spiked with horseradish. Yum! Horseradish makes pretty much everything taste better. Especially remoulade sauce.

Last but not least, fried shrimp (and some oysters too). This was another dish at Mandina's and while I never got my hands on a po' boy, this was the same thing, just no bread. More shrimp! The folks in New Orleans know how to fry their food so every thing is crisp and greaseless. Seriously, they are deep frying experts and I am happy to leave the frying to them.

Yay To Young Entrepreneurs!

So happy to have been a part of this year's "Youth Startup Icon 2011" competition held by The Markeeters & Markplus...yayness! I (surprisingly) made it into the grand final round yesterday and got into the Top 5... not bad from a total of 70 participants! And oh, I of course represented my shoe line, Up...:)

Winning the 5th place, I walked out of the competition with nothing but a valuable experience, new insights, new friends and new inspirations...alhamdulillah..:)

Panko Crusted Chicken Stuffed with Ricotta, Spinach, Tomatoes, and Basil

I needed to get rid of some leftover ricotta cheese and spinach so I created this recipe. It was SO DELICIOUS! The chicken was really moist and tender while the panko was crunchy and the ricotta mixture was flavorful and creamy. Green Bean Salad with Maple Dijon Vinaigrette

I found this recipe on Culinary Cory and decided to make it tonight. I made the vinaigrette earlier in the day and let the flavors mingle together. This salad is colorful and flavorful and was a hit with all of us. I loved, loved, LOVED the vinaigrette and look forward to trying it with other vegetables. Fashion Design - PKBL BUMN Expo 2011

On Friday, June 10, 2011, a muslim fashion design competition was held at Gramedia Expo, Surabaya. Actually, the competition itself began from a month before that. Participants were given traditional fabric randomly, and they must design + create muslim clothing for party. Here are some designs of participants..

 The second outfit from the left, became the judges most favorite that day. In my opinion, my favorite was the right (fourth).

 After the outfits worn at runway by models, they were being displayed for "sewing technique judgement". I really appreciate the first winner. Verrryyyy neat creation, and the cheap batik looks elegant too.

Hehehe here's mine.  

To minimize the cost, I sew my design by myself. Mistakes I've done: I couldn't sew chiffon material, so the bottom side left unfinished. Of course the judges noticed it and told me it should have been sewn >_< Even my model friend told me, "Heyy how could this clothes is unfinished? If you join a fashion competition it should've been fitted to the model few days before the event..." And my sewing wasn't neat at all.. :p ahhh such an experience!

I guess the event organizer didn't do their best they could. So many information were missed, like: 

Participants should bring their own mannequin -- many, including me, didn't bring it (luckily my chauffeur could went back home & brought me)

The mannequin & clothes should be left at the Expo until the next day -- after the event many participants went home brought their stuffs, then suddenly the committee told us to leave our mannequins there. 

Chairs surrounding the runway hadn't filled by "true watchers". Chairs were used to keep bags of the participants. If it's good organized, front rows should be filled with real people, shouldn't it?

Gladi Bersih/ Rehearsal was done at 12 PM --> it's Jum'ah praying time! How come "Muslim" design competition be held like that?

The MC didn't wear hijab and legs were shown (I mean, she could be more modest for this event, rite?)

Very small changing room, and easy access makes a boy could get in (although he's still maybe 7yr old, but he saw models changing clothes >_<)

The competition itself didn't give time for models to do pray.

Hmmmm does every fashion event has circumstances like that?

BTW have you noticed that Surabaya's fashion sense is very different from Jakarta/Bandung? Yeah, here people like the more "heboh" or bling bling designs...
